Neat Scanner Review: NeatDesk & NeatConnect By Sam Glover on April 21st, 2014 62 comments For a number of years, a Neat scanner was a decent option, including the NeatDesk and the NeatConnect. The Neat Company has continued to refine its scanners and software designed for the Mac platform. Both the NeatDesk desktop scanner and NeatReceipts portable scanner are can be purchased in a bundle with NeatWorks for Mac, while customers can still use the software with a variety of scanners from other companies.

It’s something that I can see using everyday, many times a day and for lengthy periods at the end of each month and the year. Not only does the NeatDesk scan a variety of documents fast once it’s done the true power of the NeatWorks software takes over recognizing text, organizing and filing in a way that just makes it downright easy to use. If you struggled with tax season this year or are someone in need of more organization in your life. Or your tired of saving mounds and mounds of paper and are ready to turn them into digital copies I strongly suggest you take a look at the NeatDesk. Both the NeatDesk and the NeatWorks software are available from the Neat web store. – $399.95 What I like – Scans all sorts of documents, quickly and accurately. What I don’t like – Expensive (but good things sometimes are.).

Tired of seeing too much paper lying around your work place? Then perhaps you need to convert them into a digital format that is easy to store and share, and would remove the clutter from your desk. A high-speed desktop scanner like the NeatDesk that lets you digitize your receipts, business cards, and other physical documents in just one batch just might be your best solution. The digital filing system of this receipt scanner is great because it is able to identify and extract the information that you want from these paper files, and organizes them in a manner convenient for you. This way, you don't have to manually encode data, transfer them into spreadsheets or worksheet programs, and then create reports for it. Below I have highlighted some of the Pros and Cons of this unique desktop scanner.

I also manage my own YouTube channel under the user name larrygreenberg. I'm always eager to help.

For receipts, it is able to capture data about vendors, dates, and totals, and reflect all of these in a comprehensive expense report. While many scanners can create digital images of receipts and business cards, it’s the processing of the information by the software that sets this scanner apart. If you want to make your paperwork management in the office or even at home easier, then the NeatDesk scanner is certainly a gadget to consider.

All-in-one scanning: Our removable input tray can scan both sides of up to 10 receipts, 10 business cards, and 10 documents at a time—or even a single, 50-page document. Key Features: Scan in receipts to: • Save digital copies of receipts and records of vendors, dates, and totals • Create expense reports and manage business and personal expenses • Keep track of expenses for tax time (records accepted by the IRS) • Export data to Excel®, Quicken®, QuickBooks®, TurboTax® Scan in business cards to: • Keep digital images of cards and contact information • Capture name, address company, title, etc. • Create your own searchable contact database • Export data to Outlook and more Scan in documents to: • Create searchable PDF files • Edit text using copy/paste • Organize and store in your digital filing cabinet The scanner is made of plastic. When I first removed it from the box I was surprised how heavy it was. The controls and settings on the scanner could not be easier. On the back there is an on/off switch and on the front there are just two buttons- Scan and PDF.

I have always had a passion for gear and gadgets. It all started for me with the release of the very first Palm Pilot.

I’m thinking NeatDesk, but since I work in the legal field too, I really enjoy the speed of the scanners we have in the office and the ability to name and place into our document management directory. Being spoiled with that hi-end technology at work, will I be disappointed with NeatDesk or tack the financial plung with another scanner?

Then we created Sections in each drawer (i.e. 2010, 2011 and 2012). Within each section we created folders to hold the related information.

I have not found ANY scanning software that will read the recipe and “file” it under the recipe name like TryNeat. Also can I edit it with this software and be able to print it off for a friend? I don’t want to purchase a product that doesn’t do what I want it for.

In addition, because the hardware is only the first half of the equation, as soon as you finish scanning the company’s software steps in and finishes the process. From Neat: Tame Your Paper Monster: The Neat Company creates integrated software and scanning solutions that help you tame your paper monster. Transform receipts, business cards and documents into organized digital files that are easy to use, easy to find and easy to share. Think of it as a digital filing cabinet—a place to track and manage all your information—except without the paper, or the filing cabinet. Scan receipts, business cards and documents in one batch while the software identifies, extracts and organizes key information. Includes NeatWorks 4.0 software.

You can check the entire system out on the. You can order from the company store. MSRP: NeatDesk- $399.95; NeatReceipts- $199.95; NeatWorks Software- $79.95 What I Like: Scanner has a small footprint; includes insert for business cards and receipts; simple to use; tight integration with the NeatWorks software What Needs Improvement: $399.95 can seem a bit pricey; not yet compatible with OS X Lion. Having a father who was heavily involved in early laser and fiber-optical research, Dan grew up surrounded by technology and gadgets. Dan’s father brought home one of the very first video games when he was young and Dan remembers seeing a “pre-release” touchtone phone. (When he asked his father what the “#” and “*” buttons were his dad said, “Some day, far in the future, we’ll have some use for them.”) Technology seemed to be in Dan’s blood but at some point he took a different path and ended up in the clergy. His passion for technology and gadgets never left him.

Posted by on [] Review: NeatDesk and NeatWorks for Mac Unclutterer – A few weeks ago, the Neat company sent me their new NeatDesk for Mac scanner and its NeatWorks software to review. I have been a Fujitsu ScanSnap loyalist for the past two years, so I wasn’t super excited about doing the NeatDesk review. In fact, I tested one of their mobile scanners a year ago and was so disappointed with it that I didn’t even post the review to the site (why clutter up your time with an awful review?). Posted by Meg on I know a cat with a mustache similar to that, but they named him Groucho. How does one go about categorizing Groucho, Charlie, and Hitler mustaches?

But at least ScanSnap’s Wi-Fi feature is free. With NeatCloud, you have to pay a monthly fee.

As items were scanned or imported, additional folders were created as needed. We quickly and easily processed all the documentation, confirmations, receipts and business cards from our test case, the trip to CES 2012 in January. Waste Not, Want Not I mentioned the not so sterling results of my previous attempt to reduce clutter by scanning without an organized system.

They should integrate with Dropbox and Evernote and others rather than try to push their own application. The only good news is that the scanner seemed faster than the HP 7510 and the form factor was smaller on my desk.

Other issues reported by customers and reviewers were customer service and honoring of guarantees. 'I thought I'd write a review while waiting for a Customer service rep,' said one. 'I've been waiting for 40 minutes so far.' 'The machine I purchased for my Mac is defective and simply does not work,' said another. 'I've been trying to get a replacement for 4 months and they will not stand behind their product.' But most people seem to agree that the NeatDesk is a 'great product.' 'I have no issues with, it is, in a word, 'neat' - minimal footprint, scan is fast and clear,' said another.

Then he can search easily, etc. It would be only for his personal use, and for this specific task. What do you think? As a former paralegal, I understand your negative review on it, but for this limited (and timely) project, it seems it may be the ticket.

For a number of years, a Neat scanner was a decent option, including the NeatDesk and the NeatConnect. Neat seems to have discontinued its hardware business to focus on cloud-based scanning and document management software, so we definitely can no longer recommend Neat scanners and suggest you get a instead. That said, if you’re still shopping Neat scanners for some reason, here are our NeatDesk and NeatConnect scanner reviews. NeatDesk Neat Scanner Review I can’t help comparing the NeatDesk to the ScanSnap, mainly because a ScanSnap has been sitting on my desk for many years. ScanSnaps are easy to set up, easy to use, come with simple scanning software, and include Adobe Acrobat, a ~$250 value. But I have always wanted to try the NeatDesk, so I was thrilled when Neat gave me a test unit to try out.

The vast majority of the work is done automatically! Design/Style As far as aesthetics are concerned, the NeatDesk for Mac does not disappoint.

Design/Style Despite its small size and portability, the NeatDesk for Mac is very well constructed and solidly built. It features the same design aesthetic as the NeatDesk for Mac, featuring a compact, curvy design made from solid and durable white polycarbonate. It ditches the boxy “industrial” sharp corners and classic grey or black color scheme of many office products, the result of which is a device that is as stylish as it is functional. Neat seems to have taken great effort in the design an implementation of this product.

The folks at the Neat Company sent one of their for my family and me to try. I have to tell you, I’d seen the infomercial and was pretty excited when I found out we were going to get to try one. We’re mostly a Mac household so I selected NeatDesk for Mac (they do offer a NeatDesk for Windows too). Everything you need to help get your paper under control is in the box – scanner, power cord, USB cable, software, and calibration sheet are all safely packed for you. I was excited to get started and the Neat people must get that a lot because they include a Quick Start guide to get you going in a jiffy. The software installation was quick and straightforward and before I knew it, I was clearing off my desk! The scanner is so fast – and quiet! The NeatDesk will scan up to 24 color, single-sided pages per minute or up to 24 grayscale, duplex (both sides – at once!) pages per minute. The tray can hold 15 business cards and 15 receipts and 15 letter sized documents at once, or it will hold 50 letter sized documents alone, if you take out the paper tray.

I will be not be using the Neat scanner going forward. So what was wrong you ask?

If your total experience with scanners is with the flatbed type that sits atop all-in-one printers, you may be excused for thinking scanners are not all that exciting. Given the slow, awkward, one-sheet-at-a-time way these devices perform, it’s hard to imagine using them to convert a stack of documents into scanned images. That’s why we have document scanners. These devices can dispense with paper at speeds of around 25 pages per minute.

The installation process was very speedy and I completed it in a manner of minutes. Once the software was successfully installed it was time to set up the actual NeatDesk scanner.

Even if you have a flatbed scanner, it's worth considering getting one of these devices. While they are not well-suited for scanning photographs at top quality or for scanning a book (assuming you don't want to tear out the pages), they are much faster and more convenient for just about everything else.

Once again, let’s try to compare with the ScanSnap. The ScanSnap Organizer is similarly useless bloatware, but at least you have the option not to install it. Plus, the ScanSnap comes bundled with the hugely useful and valuable Adobe Acrobat, which actually is worth a couple hundred dollars, and substantially increases the value of what’s in the box.

If not do you know of any other scanner and software for what I want? So, after reading your review, and the other comments, I think Neat may do what I (or my pastor) needs it to do. Let me give you the low-down, and you tell me what you think. My pastor has about 200+ pages of article clippings (newspaper, magazine, and hardcopy emails printed) in a hardcopy folder that he has to manually go through to look for a certain topic or story or situation. Many times he uses these as illustrations or references in his sermons. He wants to scan them and be able to search by keyword and/or subject.

Scanning companies have this idea that you will want to keep all your documents tied up in one piece of software, instead of organizing them into your client folders. For example, NeatWorks will help you scan business cards—which is nice—but who wants to try browsing contacts in their scanning software instead of say, Outlook or Google Contacts? Or client files. Do you want them locked into NeatWorks’s proprietary database, or do you want to be able to easily navigate files on your computer, sync them across computers, access them on your phone, and so on? (I’ll take the latter.) Further, NeatWorks is sl ooow.

For receipts I used Jott Not on my iPhone. But again the process was tedious. When I saw the NeatDesk in a technology magazine I was immediately excited.

If NeatWorks was unable to decide what text represented a phone number, for example, you can usually click on the phone number in the scanned image and drag it to the phone field, avoiding the need to type the number. There are also popup menus for many fields, offering yet another chance to fill in a field without having to type. Ultimately, there will be cases (such as when text is misspelled), that will require manual fixing. At this point, NeatWorks performs just like any standard database: you can enter or edit any text via the keyboard. As for generic OCR, such as a Macworld page I scanned, NeatWorks did fairly well.

With the ScanSnap, however, you can keep adding to the file easily, and create a single PDF out of many ADF loads. You do have one option with the NeatDesk that you don’t have with the ScanSnap, though:. TWAIN is a scanning protocol that lets other software talk to your scanner. For example, you can scan from Acrobat, Windows Live Photo Gallery, Photoshop, and pretty much anything else that has anything to do with images.
