If your entire BM toolbar disappears, you're dragging off the Bookmark toolbar item (your entire bookmark toolbar) instead of the Bookmark menu button. In customize mode the button should appear to the right of the urlbar on the main toolbar (even if it shows to the far right of the BM bar when not in customize mode).
